How To Build Flamewood Ignite Chieftain In POE 3.23 Affliction League?

Dec 13, 2023

Here I’ll be showing off my Flamewood Ignite Chieftain build. But I want to stress that this is not a full-blown guide. This is more about giving players a foundation of similar characters to get off to a better start in POE 3.23.

Intro

Flamewood Support was added in POE 3.22. This is one of the most interesting supports to come out of a game recently. Support gives the totem skill, Avenging Flame. It triggered Avenging Flame when the totem was hit. Avenging Flame deals fire damage based on supporting totem life.

This particular build is based on ignite, which is one of the build archetypes Flamewood excels at. But I want to mention that this will be highly dependent on Vaal Ancestral Warchief’s insane life. If this were to change, this build would be greatly affected.

I still think this build is novel enough, but not that obvious. But I want to warn anyone who is considering playing Avenging Flame build.

However, some bosses are impossible to complete, and it made some content more difficult due to the need to hit totems. I don’t want that to change, so Avenging Flame will always be sub-par.

Gems

First, we will start talking about gem selection. As some people have pointed out in Crucible, Vaal Ancestral Warchief’s life total is very large. A character currently with a level 23 Vaal Ancestral Warchief has 33k life, and at level 26, it has 45k life.

In comparison, the life of a level 23 non-Vaal Ancestral Warchief is as low as 5k. This number is unusually high and may change in the future. Until then, this is probably the only reasonable choice for an Avenging Flame build based on ignite.

Our crucial link will be Vaal Ancestral Warchief and Flamewood, with the remaining links doing as much damage as possible. So my gem settings are Deadly Ailments, Burning Damage, Swift Affliction and Empower Support.

But there is no Empower in my link. This is because my level 3 Empower died on another character. Instead, we used Lifetap Support. This also means that it planned the totem to be level 26. While it’s level 23 on display, you can also use a level 21 Vaal Gem to get level 5 Awakened Empower.

While level 21 Vaal Gem is possible, if you want to spend POE Currency on level 5 Awakened Empower, I recommend you look at other builds.

Another important skill setting for this build is Arcanist Brand setting. This build uses the powerful Defiled Forces node sitting above the Witch.

Arcanist Brand setting will refresh the highest ignite currently on the target by cursing it with Flammability. This is one part of the build that needs further refinement.

Ideally, you’ll also want to add Flame Surge to this link. But this build gets a lot of faster ignite sources, so I noticed that when Flammability is triggered every second, ignite seems to drop off.

Arcanist Brand links are as follows: Arcanist Brand, Flammability, Lifetap, Faster Casting and Increased Duration Support.

Lifetap is important because the trigger is mana intensive. Faster Casting helps heavily refresh ignite and makes initial casting faster. Increased Duration Support saves us from having to update Brand too much.

Gear

Next, I want to cover the rest of the gear for this build.

Weapons

The weapons used in this build are unique. The best base is Lion Sword, which implicitly provides 50 Strength and 50 Dexterity, with other options available. Important considerations are that it has a base that only has attack modifiers on the prefix, and the only gem mods available are Socketed Gems and Socketed Melee Gems.

The way I make Maces is to use substitutes until I hit +2 Melee Gems. Also, we need to spend Divine Orbs to roll it to medium to high resistance. If it’s Chaos, keep it. If it’s something else, change it to Fire.

Rings

This version uses two unique rings. One of these is Berek’s Respite, which is a key aspect to achieving any kind of clarity on this build.

When killed, it spreads ignite to nearby enemies. This spreads both the ignites of Avenging Flame skills and Hinekora.

Another ring is Replica Emberwake. This gives us a huge damage increase, roughly 50% more damage.

But whether to use it does require some consideration. Because the ignite duration needs to be long enough to be refreshed by Defiled Forces. This is why Flame Surge is not possible in Arcanist Brand links. But considering how much damage Replica Emberwake does, this is the first choice.

POE: Replica Emberwake

Body Armor

Like other Chieftains, this build uses Cloak of Flame. This provides a lot of effective Fire Resistance on Chieftain and a lot of Physical DoT Mitigation.

Cloak of Flame is the only source of converting DoT damage into another damage type. It provides a large amount of ignite duration, which helps mitigate Replica Emberwake’s 90% reduction in ignite duration when waking up.

I would like to point out here that once Defiled Forces refresh the ignite, the increase and decrease of the ignite duration does not matter because the ignite will always be 4 seconds in this case.

These three items are necessary for my current setup and I think they are good ideas.

Passive Tree

I won’t go into detail about this Passive Tree because nothing insanely complicated is going on. We only do effective damage, gain 200% health, and mostly gain maximum defense.

With tattoos being removed in Affliction League, there may be a better solution. Small Cluster with Introspection can fill this role. It requires two additional nodes. But this build has a Lethal Pride setup, which provides a ton of good nodes. So there is absolutely no need to worry.

Conclusions

Overall, I think Flamewood Ignite Chieftain damage scaling is effective enough to handle the early Affliction League content with ease.

But because this will be highly dependent on Vaal Ancestral Warchief’s insane life. If Vaal Ancestral Warchief’s life is reduced or Defiled Forces are changed, I think it will be necessary to reduce the built defenses to get more damage.

Regardless, you can definitely tweak this build to suit your play style. Hope you have fun playing the game!
