What Is The Current State Of POE The Forbidden Sanctum?

Dec 14, 2022

Recently, Path of Exile 3.20 expansion, The Forbidden Sanctum, which is highly anticipated by players, finally ushered in the release. At the same time, this new expansion also brings a lot of new content to players, such as a new challenge league, new existing systems and builds, and new ways of playing.

Players have been waiting far too long for this update. One of the main reasons for this is that they all thought the last league themed around the mysterious Kalandra was pretty bad. Due to the extreme lack of loot in POE 3.19, the league mechanic is not very interesting, and even Archnemesis monsters has been very frustrating, and many players have quit the game. Faced with such an uncontrollable situation, many full-time PoE streamers also feel the need to stop mapping and get out of the house. In general, Lake of Kalandra has a lot of shortcomings, causing players to complain again and again.

Fortunately, GGG stopped the loss in time and carefully created The Forbidden Sanctum expansion. Personally, my initial impressions of this new expansion are not bad. One of the reasons is that the Sanctum League introduced a roguelike mechanic. As long as you can clear its procedurally generated levels, you'll be rewarded handsomely. Secondly, Archnemesis, which players hated so much, has been replaced by a completely revamped rare monster system in this new expansion. What's more, the loot drops now are more in line with players' expectations. After a weekend of scuffed cobra lash leveling and explode blade vortex mapping, I can tell you with confidence that the game we thought we lost in 3.19 is back.

What About The Forbidden Sanctum Expansion Now?

The current POE 3.20 is definitely better than POE 3.19. The start of the Sanctum League was as problem-free as any league start. Although there were some small bugs that had little impact during the first release, they are basically back to normal now.

We now refocus our attention on the Forbidden Sanctum itself. First, the expansion introduces a roguelike mechanic. Under this mechanism, you need to run a four-story dungeon. Each floor in this dungeon has eight rooms, and each map you run on the atlas gives you access to a room. You will also find a lot of monsters, bosses, traps and new mechanics in it.

Ruthless

What's more, the Forbidden Sanctum introduces a new health pool called Resolve. Whenever you get hit by an enemy or get hit by a trap, your Resolve will decrease. Once you run out of Resolve, your Sanctum run will be completely over.

I personally think that if such league mechanics can continue to develop, it will be very interesting. You'll be more motivated to learn boss patterns and dodging skillshots because of the way Resolve works. As long as you persevere, the rewards will definitely exist. I've seen multiple Divine Orbs in Sanctum end bonuses myself. Some players also uploaded a screenshot of a mirror on Reddit.

If you're new to the Sanctum run, you're bound to be frustrated. In my own case, in the early days I did more runs than I could count. I'd often get hit by some minibosses after walking through a few rooms and end up getting nothing. Second, because the rooms are random, not all rooms have merchants in them. The Aureus coins I've picked up in the dungeon are worthless without the merchant. Also, some build times are much easier than others, totem and minion builds seem to be a head above others.

Ruthless

Another feature of the Sanctum League is the introduction of a new mode, Ruthless. The difficulty it offers is a new way to play Path of Exile, but not for everyone.

Ruthless increases the difficulty in many ways. First of all, loot and skill gems are basically non-existent in this mode. The items you can touch are generally common items, and if you are lucky you can also come across some rare items. Second, all movement skills are disabled, and you have to keep running to avoid extra damage. Also, when you reach the map, compounding XP penalties will continue to stack on your body. The crafting bench has also been removed. All in all, this mode lives up to its name.

As far as I'm concerned, I think Ruthless is pretty darn good. This mode is the polar opposite of most gameplay in Path of Exile. Specifically, you don't see a zoomed-in map here, the item drop rate is extremely low, and you can't even buy skill gems from merchants, so there's really a makeshift feel to them everywhere. Anyway, it is very difficult, but the more you play, the more addictive it becomes.

What Is The General Reaction Of Players?

Most players are very happy and at ease. You can see a lot of posts and tweets about the balance of the Sanctum and there's a lot of heated discussions about how the new expansion will play out. But there are few complaints about the new season. Everyone seemed satisfied and having a good time and the league hit a concurrent user spike of 213,480 players.

In general, if you want to play the Sanctum League more easily, good equipment, weapons, and skill gems must be essential. Therefore, preparing some POE 3.20 Currency in advance will be your best choice.
